Si Van Gogh hubiera trabajado en la sección toons de la Warner Brothers y un día le hubieran dicho que se hiciera cargo de Marvin the Martian, seguramente se las habría arreglado así (ver arriba, excelente imán de heladera/refrigerador encontrado en http://www.critchley.ca/Marvin%20the%20Martian.htm). Siempre nos han intrigado las posibilidades de nuevas formas de vida, pero ya que los ETs son tan sigilosos como el yeti o el abominable hombre de las nieves ¿por qué no fabricar nosotros mismos formas de vida nueva? Es el desafío que lanzó el sitio io9s (http://io9.com/). Dado que llevarlo a la práctica puede tardar más que los 9 meses tradicionales, basta con explicarlo bien y demostrar su plausibilidad para ganarse una invitación a la Conferencia de Vida Biosintética en Hong-Kong, en octubre próximo. Hay dos categorías. En la segunda el premio consiste en: US$ 1.000 y ¡¡que un dibujante de comic cool dibuje tú forma de vida y te regale el original!! De manera que, nos vemos en Hong-Kong, me mandan un post (con pic) desde allá. O me escanean el dibujo agraciado y luego -con US$ 100 bastan- me invitan a almorzar.

Las categorías del concurso

Category One: BioBricks LifeformUsing the BioBricks registry of standard biological parts, propose a lifeform design that you could conceivably create in a lab. Must include a complete description of how you would make the lifeform, what it would do, and what possible hazards might be involved in creating it. You may design this creature with a team, but only one of you can claim the prize. You may enter lifeforms that you have entered in other contests, but you must state in your entry which contest(s) you've already entered. More points given if you've actually got a working organism.Prize: All travel and hotel expenses paid trip to the Synthetic Biology Conference in Hong Kong in October, as well as the chance to present your research there.

Category Two: General Synthetic LifeformThis lifeform can be more creative. Propose a scientifically justifiable lifeform, which could conceivably be created using current technology. Explain how you would create it, what it would do, and hazards involved. Unlike the BioBricks lifeform, this lifeform can be more speculative. It should be science fictional, but must remain scientifically plausible.Prize: $1000, plus a cool comic book artist will draw your lifeform and you'll get a signed copy of the original art.
